The 2013 Australian Open is underway with the first runs of the mens C1 and womens K1 heats now concluded.
It has been a tough morning of racing at the 2013 Australian Open with a strong wind making it a challenge for the paddlers when navigating the gates down the fast Sydney Olympic Course.
The wind didn’t appear to affect Frenchman Thibaut Vielliard who flew down the Penrith Whitewater course producing a fast clean run to top the time sheet in 90.63, 0.35 seconds ahead of Germans Jan Benzien and Franz Anton.
Ian Borrows (NSW) and Robin Jeffery (WA) also impressed finishing the first run in equal fourth place, while Ethan Hodson (NSW) finished ninth.
Austrian World Champion Corinna Kuhnle dominated the womens K1 first run finishing more than six seconds quicker than Victorian Sarah Grant in second, with Czech paddler
Katerina Kudejova in third.
Ros Lawrence (7th), Jessica Fox (12th) and Noemie Fox (13th) were the best of the other Australians with the second run to be contested from 12:17pm.
